Marcellus & Borsch Winged Express AA Fuel Altered Flaming Willy 10

AA/Fuel Altereds are the wildest machines to ever race the 1320. You have the power of a Top Fueler or Funny Car stuffed into a short wheelbase roadster. With a combo like that, things are bound to get squirrely.

The AA/Fuel Altered of Al Marcellus and Willy Borsch is arguably the most popular AA/FA ever. Willy Borsch’s driving style earned him the nickname of “One Armed Willy.” Not that he didn’t have two arms, but rather than he would drive the little red beast with only one hand on the steering wheel! According to partner, Al Marcellus, Willy wasn’t show boating, but rather the car was such a rough ride, Willy was using his left hand to hold on to the t-bucket!

Willy would often get the “Winged Express” almost completely sideways while doing a burnout. At that point, the ONLY thing a driver can do is drive the car out. Willy was notorious for driving the sideways Altered about 80% out of one of these launches, then lifting off the gas, and letting the car snap from side-to-side - sending photographers scrambling for cover. That’s how Willy got one of his other nick names, “Wild Willy” Borsch. Willy also had an affection for doing FIRE BURNOUTS, earning himself yet another nick name - “Flaming Willy.”

The original art was first used in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated as part of the "Retrospect: Drag Racing History" series in the late '80s.
